Relay for Life – JKCC Survivorship Month Kick-off

The Joan Karnell Cancer Center will kick off 2013 Survivorship Month a little early at the Relay for Life in South Philly, on May 18, from 10 am to 10 pm, at Marconi Plaza on Broad Street, between Oregon and Packer Avenues, Philadelphia. The JKCC team – Together We Can – welcomes all staff, patients, family members and friends to come together for another unforgettable day and evening as we celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against cancer. Harrison Fund Applications Deadline
The Harrison Fund Committee is accepting the submission of proposals for funding for the term July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014. The Committee has historically supported individual proposals with annual budgets in the range of $5,000 to $20,000.

Applications are due May 20. Proposals should be submitted electronically to Frederick Nunes, MD, chair, Harrison Fund Committee at Frederick.Nunes@uphs.upenn.edu and copy to cigall@pahosp.comDownload the application.

The Harrison Memorial Fund was created by Deed of Trust of George L. Harrison on February 24, 1922.  Among other things, the Trust provides that income from the Fund should be used for “… the direct benefit of poor patients in ways not ordinarily supplied by usual Hospital funds.”  Income from the fund supports prospectively identified therapies for poor patients that are not covered by the patients’ insurers and cannot be covered by their personal financial resources.

2013 Healthiest Employers Awards Program, Featuring Keynote Speaker Dr. Gary W. Dorshimer

Gary-DorshimerPAH’s own Gary W. Dorshimer, MD, FACP, FCPP, section chief, General Internal Medicine, is the special keynote speaker at the “Meet the Healthiest Teams in Greater Philadelphia” health fair, sponsored and presented by The Philadelphia Business Journal and United Healthcare.

Dr. Dorshimer, also of Penn Personalized Care at PAH, is the Team Internist for the Philadelphia Eagles and Head Team Physician for the Philadelphia Flyers. Board certified and specializing in both General Internal Medicine and Sports Medicine, Dr. Dorshimer will present information at the fair on how to stay healthy – on and off the field.

Join Penn Medicine and CHOP at the 2013 Delaware Valley Congenital Heart Walk

Penn-CHOP-Heart-Walk-TeamIt will be a great day as Penn and CHOP join patients, families and colleagues from around the region to raise awareness of congenital heart disease and highlight our commitment to providing life-long care for those affected by congenital heart disease. The Philadelphia Adult Congenital Heart Center has formed a team for this special event – a joint team between both hospitals. The Philadelphia Adult Congenital Heart Center will have a prominent role this year as Penn Medicine and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia are the site sponsors for this walk, just one of less than 20 walks held in communities nationwide.

Head ups for all PAH staff celebrating a milestone year of employment:  this year’s Employee Service Awards event will be held Thursday, June 13. More info to come!

2013 Ehrenzeller Award Ceremony and Reception
On Tuesday, June 18, at 12 pm, the last Medical Grand Rounds of the academic year will be held at PAH in the Zubrow Auditorium. It is also when the Ehrenzellar Award is traditionally presented by the Ex-Residents Association. The 2013 Ehrenzellar Award recipient is Stephen Schuster, MD (Intern group of 1981-81), director, Lymphoma Program and Lymphoma Translational Research at the Abramson Cancer Center, and the Robert and Margarita Louis-Dreyfus Associate Professor in Chronic Lyphocytic Leukemia and Lymphoma Clinical Care and Research. Dr. Schuster will highlight current and future research in the treatment of lymphoma and related diseases. Reception and lunch to follow in the Great Court, Pine Building.
