Dang New Director of Abramson Cancer Center

Chi-dangOn September 1, the Abramson Cancer Center welcomed a new director: Chi Van Dang, MD, PhD. Dang comes to Penn from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

At John’s Hopkins, Dang’s laboratory contributed to the understanding of the function of the MYC cancer gene, which has emerged as a central transcription factor – or gene switch – in many different human cancers.

Dang is an elected member of the Association of American Physicians, Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, and fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He has received many awards for his work, including an NIH Merit Award for his work on MYC regulation of cancer cell metabolism and the Golden Torch Award, which honors the progress and significant achievements of Vietnamese Americans. Dang has also served as editor and served on the editorial boards of numerous professional journals, including Cancer Research, Clinical and Translational Science, Current Cancer Therapy Reviews and Genes & Cancer.

Born in Saigon, Viet Nam, Dang came to this country in 1967. He graduated with highest honors from the University of Michigan in 1975 and three years later earned his PhD degree with distinction in chemistry from Georgetown University. He received his MD degree from Johns Hopkins University, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
