FY11 Accomplishments at PPMC

We proudly present our FY11 accomplishments at PPMC. 

1. Promoting the Culture of Patient Safety and Quality  PennStar

  • Received the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN)’s Beacon Award, presented to the CCU and SICU; only 5 percent of critical care units nationwide earn this prestigious award
  • Implemented Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) program in our ACE unit, becoming one of 300 hospitals participating in the only national geriatric initiative to improve the care of older hospitalized adults
  • Received DVHC Quality Award and UPHS Quality Awards for Reduction in Orthopaedic Post Surgical Site Infections
  • Honored as UPHS Quality Award Runner-up for Observation Unit Implementation
  • Earned UPHS Quality Award for the Concurrent and Post-Discharge Clinical Documentation & Coding Quality Improvement Initiative
  • Recognized as Blue Distinction Center of Excellence for Orthopaedics and Cardiac Care
  • Earned Press Ganey recognition for the Voice of the Patient program’s Statistically Significant Improvement
  • Continued to sustain our outstanding patient safety initiative outcomes, including:
    • SICU: over 1 year without a ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP)
    • MICU: more than 600 days without a Blood Stream Infection (BSI)
    • CCU: more than 300 days without a Blood Stream Infection (BSI)
    • 3East: more than 1300 days without a Blood Stream Infection (BSI)
    • ACE unit: more than 400 days without a Blood Stream Infection (BSI)
    • ACE unit: more than 360 days without a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
    • 5South: more than 645 days without a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
    • 4East: more than 450 days without a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

  • Expanded to 12 Unit-based Clinical Leadership (UBCL) teams in place and leading quality and patient safety initiatives at the patient bedside
  • Received a "three star" rating for PPMC’s Cardiac Surgery program from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), denoting the highest category of quality and indicating a score significantly higher than the overall STS mean score
  • Initiated PARTNER Trial for percutaneous valve implantation in patients with severe aortic stenosis; 8 cases completed to date
  • Established Penn Mesothelioma and Pleural Program
  • 4 South UBCL team developed an evidence-based alcohol withdrawal assessment tool, monitoring tool and treatment protocols, and reduced related falls and critical care transfers
  • SNF implemented a new patient-flow procedure to support the UPHS continuum of care to Penn Center for Rehabilitation and Care (PCRC)

2. Work Environment Improvements

  • Re-painted every inpatient room   Presby
  • Upgraded Cupp building public spaces and elevator lobbies
  • Upgraded 1st floor Wright-Saunders hallway and bathrooms
  • Renovated OR 3 and OR 4 to provide state-of-the-art endovascular technology
  • Renovated the CCU family waiting room
  • Renovated and upgraded of the Interventional Radiology Suite
  • Completed renovation of the Central Sterile Processing Department
  • Renovated Infusion Suite in MAB, including deluxe infusion chairs with video
  • Completed phase 1 of the Skilled Nursing Unit Renovation, Phase 2 underway
  • Installed computer arms in all patient rooms for the scheduled FY12 KBC launch
  • Replaced 4 East Nurse Call System
  • Continued the Patient Bed Replacement Project: 48 new beds purchased and put in service
  • Completed wireless internet (WiFi) network for PPMC Campus
  • Installed new entrance doors in the Scheie building, with a revolving front entrance to better accommodate patients, wheel chairs and stretchers and control the air temperature in the lobby, as well as new staff automatic entrance doors at the south entrance
  • Finished new deck and concrete repairs for garage
  • Began working on 5 Cupp Project – lighting, corridor improvements, furniture
  • Made storeroom enhancements, including permanent racks
  • Installed of Pyxis Anesthesia units in all Operating Rooms
  • Upgraded to Pyxis 4000 platform
  • Installed of EPIC Beacon in PPMC Oncology Suite and Cherry Hill
  • Installed Art in Cupp and MOB lobby and corridors  

3.   Enhanced Equipment

  • Purchased new sequential compression devices
  • Acquired new furniture for patient rooms, including over bed tables, chairs, side tables
  • Installed new vending machines campus wide, more healthy selections and accept credit cards
  • Installed flat panel TVs on 5th, 3rd floor Cupp and SNF
  • Enhanced landscaping, with plantings in Myrin Circle and entranceways to create a tranquil environment
  • Installed music in public waiting areas of Cupp, Café and W/S lobbies

4.   Safety at Work

  Group

  • Expanded Safe Handling program with 18 lifts installed and 3 portable lifts purchased
  • Centralized Fire Command and Control System installed
  • Upgraded Sprinkler System in 4 Scheie, Interventional Radiology, and ORs
  • Installed ‘Calming Barriers’ in Myrin Circle to slow traffic
  • Enhanced security and access control in Scheie, including new cameras, stair tower and elevator controls
  • Safety trained 100 laboratory staff members on hazardous materials handling
  • Repaired concrete throughout the campus
  • Began installing electronic locks on all medication and clean supply rooms, with card access
  • Established Emergency Management surge area in the medical library
  • Launched vendor access control system
  • Green Committee established Eco Rep program with 17 staff volunteers to support recycling and conservation in respective departments; Eco Reps leading first project – can and bottle recycling initiative

5.   Employee Recognition Employee-recognition

  • Celebrated over 2120 years of service among 210 employees honored at the Annual Service Awards Event, for 5 to 40 years of service to our patients
  • Held Another successful Presby Idol Event in November 2010; plans are underway to host another event.
  • Increased salaries for eligible employees awarded again in July 2011
  • Implemented Presby Star Program with over 50 employees recognized from over 700 nominations

6.   Growth and Expansion

  • Launched satellite Infusion Suite program in Cherry Hill, NJ
  • Brought new PPMC services to Penn Medicine at Valley Forge, Radnor, Woodbury Heights
  • Expanded Heart Rescue program to a total of 6 affiliates and several other participating facilities, while the Heart Rescue program marked another milestone, reaching 1,000 patient transfers since the program launched

In Fiscal Years 2010 and 2011, more than $22,000,000 was spent on capital improvements, renovations and equipment for Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

These are just a few of the many projects we’ve completed or started in FY11. In FY12, we’ll continue to make strategic upgrades that enhance your work areas and abilities.
