Two PPMC Nurses Finalists for Nursing Excellence Awards

Nursing Spectrum magazine featured two Penn Presbyterian nurses in this year’s Nursing Excellence program.

Lauren Fagan HeadshotLauren Fagan, RN, BSN, nurse unit-based educator for the Thoracic Intermediate Care and Observation Unit, was a finalist in the Mentoring category. “Fagan identifies changes to skill needs on the unit and provides the appropriate education to address them,” wrote Shawn Deutch in Lauren’s nomination. “She implemented a new innovative patient ambulation program and communication board to empower patients to participate in their care. The unit has won two awards during the two years she has been its nurse unit-based educator, including one for the Patient Ambulation Program, which earned a spot in the top 10 for the 2009 Delaware Valley Patient Safety Award. The Observation Unit received honorable mention in the 2010 Health System Quality and Patient Safety Awards.”

Miriam Headshotedited Miriam P. Yorkman, RN, BSN, CARN was a finalist in the Clinical Care category, recognizing her 14 years service in the hospital’s Addictions Treatment Unit. In the nomination, Theresa Paulson noted that Miriam is an active member of several critical multidisciplinary committees, including the hospital’s Documentation Committee, Peer Review and Mentoring Committee, Magnet Champions and the Nursing Shared Governance Leadership Council. She serves in a leadership capacity as the Magnet Unit Based Council Chair and as chair of the Cultural Diversity Committee, a group she helped create.
