Shortly before Penn Medicine distributed Top 10 t-shirts to employees last fall, HR announced a new twist to the recognition: share your pride – and your t-shirt – with someone else, take a photo and submit it. The most creative and memorable entry submission would win an iPad.
Choosing from the more than 60 submissions – which were taken from locations around the globe – proved difficult, but a winner emerged: Michael Smith, web manager, Interactive Marketing and Web Strategy.
“For two weeks in November, I returned to Nepal for my second medical missions trip to this impoverished country. Our group was organized by the Pennsylvania United Medical Association (http://www.puma2000.org). In this picture, we are doing a medical clinic in the remote town of Simi, Nepal. Just for perspective, there is one town a few miles north, and that’s it. . . nothing but snowcapped mountains and yeti. During these clinics, we generally see 200-400 patients per day. We meet in converted school buildings or churches, hang curtains for privacy, and offer the best medicine possible via generators on a dirt floor. We use a portable ultrasound machine so women can see their babies for the first time. Also, we’re able to perform basic diagnostics, blood tests, etc, in order to treat certain ailments through our portable pharmacy. I was proud to show off my Penn Medicine colors, because they represent the same hope that we offered to these needy people in Nepal!”
