Creating Casseroles to Feed the Homeless

Members of the Penn Lung Center have been making a difference in our community by preparing and donating casseroles to the University City Hospitality Coalition. The UCHC is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to fighting hunger and homelessness in West Philadelphia.

According to Deb Toomey, practice administrator of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care, the group was looking for a community project last spring and found it in Simply Because, Penn Medicine’s community benefit report.

“I called UCHC and asked how we could help. They said, ‘We can always use casseroles!’” … so that’s exactly what they did. Armed with recipes provided by UCHC, they prepared 17 casseroles last April and another 16 in June. “We’re hoping, if interest continues to grow, we’ll be able to do this quarterly.” If you’d like to participate, e-mail deb.toomey@uphs.upenn.edu.
