The DAISY Award is a nationwide program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care given by nurses everyday. Pennsylvania Hospital is proud to be a DAISY Award Hospital Partner, recognizing one of our nurses with this special honor every month.
The DAISY (which stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award was started by the DAISY Foundation, which formed in 2000, after J. Patrick Barnes, then 33, died of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease. DAISY Award recipients are nominated by their peers, physicians, patients and families, and other staff and administrators.
Pennsylvania Hospital's first DAISY Award for the month of June went to Dawn Bergmann, BSN, RN, nurse on 5 Cathcart. The July DAISY Award went to Barbara Addison, RN, in the ICU on 3 Schiedt.
Dawn was nominated by a colleague for her "enthusiasm and energy and the inspiration she provides for everyone that works with her to do a better job and be a team player." Dawn was also nominated for her "exceptional clinical skills, and as a great preceptor. She works with boundless energy, working extra shifts to assure that patient care is not compromised. Dawn makes every patient feel special. She gives each patient and family her total attention, leading them through the clinical inpatient process,
educating them, assuaging their fears, advocating for them with the clinical team, and significantly making a difference in their lives during the most stressful time of all-when they are ill and hospitalized. She is an example to all who work with her."
The July DAISY Award went to Barbara Addison, RN, in the ICU on 3 Schiedt. She was nominated by a patient's family member, who stated, "My mother has been in the ICU since early April. Barbara has made a significant difference in her life. She has provided her with knowledgeable and consistently kind care. She has provided my family with the same. My mother smiles and feels safe when she is cared for by Barbara. My mother has been critically more than once and Barbara has helped her get through these times. She really deserves recognition for her expertise and kind care. It would be a gift to us also if Barbara received this award."
Congratulations, Dawn and Barbara!
